Project Overview
- Location: Gherang, Victoria
- Size: Private property with new wetland works and fenced revegetation zones
- Partners: Steve Reed, Amba Begg, Trent Leen, FGA volunteers from Geelong branch
- Focus: Creation of ephemeral wetlands to support water storage, fish habitat, and ground-nesting habitat, including riparian offsets
Located on the northern edge of the Great Otway National Park in Gherang, Victoria, a new private conservation site is being developed through the shared vision of landowner Steve Reed and the Wetlands Environmental Taskforce. The project, called the Wild Outdoors Wetlands, is transforming a simple farm dam into a thriving permanent and ephemeral wetland system, designed to support native fish, frogs, aquatic invertebrates, and waterfowl.
By creating a wider and more effective catchment area, the efforts will produce various levels of water depth and biodiversity in habitat and aquatic plants, riparian verges, and diverse woodland habitat.
As part of the restoration, five hen houses and five parrot boxes will be installed to support ground-nesting ducks and replace lost tree hollows, which WET will monitor and track for nesting activity.
The project will be delivered in multiple phases, and we are currently in early stages of development. We would like to thank Brad Drew Trucks PTY LTD for their kind discounted machinery hire.
We’re looking forward to further developments and will keep members and the public updated as we progress.
